Accidents happen and they seem to happen at the worst possible time, such as when someone has just lost their job and has no money for things such as medical bills, car trouble or other emergencies.

One place people turn to in order to get quick cash is their local pawn shop in which they can sell gold jewelry and other gold items or valuables for cash on the spot.  Pawn shops are similar to a bank in which they collect collateral in exchange for cash money; however with a bank, there is always a credit check and sometimes a cosigner is required and a person could be turned away if their credit is poor.

A pawn shop does not require credit checks, background checks or even cosigners when extending credit to an individual who needs quick cash now. A pawn shop will take your gold jewelry or other valuables such as electronics, computers, musical instruments, fire arms, DVDs or CDs or anything of value and hold it for a predetermined period of time – usually a month or two – and at the end of that period, an individual has two choices. They could keep the cash and allow the pawn shop to keep their valuable item at which time the pawn shop sells the valuable item in their store in order to make back the money they gave to the individual or the loan; or the individual pays back the loan, with interest and receives their valuable the pawn shop was holding as collateral.

Many states regulate the amount of interest a pawn shop is allowed to charge its customers.  Some states only allow pawn shops to charge a minimum interest of three to five percent while others charged upwards of 20 percent.

Some people make a living selling gold jewelry on shops by going to flea markets and estate sales and purchasing all the gold jewelry they can find at ridiculously low prices and then turning around and selling them to the pawn shops to make extra cash.
