MIT proposed using a laser technology in order to measure the inner and the outer portion of the ear because the way a mold is made now, a waxy substance is poured into the ear and allowed to dry and then trimmed and that is the ear mold which holds the tube that connects to the hearing aid with the computer parts inside. This mold is not flexible and does not allow for any ‘give’ when the person wearing it is talking or chewing. The MIT laser would measure a person’s ear while they are chewing on a piece of gum which would then allow for a three dimensional view of the inner ear and then a more flexible mold would be created.

In the Denmark company’s version, they propose a hearing aid with integrated digital signal processing to analyze the vibrations and algorithms held within the mold.  What this company is trying to do is minimize the amount of feedback while optimizing hearing aids for maximum stability.  Their findings, at their hearing clinic, also help determine the best place to put a microphone.  Their software program allows them to better study the human ear and how it hears individually and the best course of action to be taken in order for that individual to hear better.
