Hearing Clinics across the World are Looking for New Ways to Help Hearing-Impaired use Latest Technology to Hear Better

hearing clinicsHearing aids have come a long way since the large ‘black box’ style of the late 40s and 50s which resembled a transistor radio strapped to a hearing-impaired person’s chest and then they had two long wires which connected the large hearing aid up to their ears but most people could only hear what was described as noise and not actual sounds or people speaking.

Today there are hearing clinics that offer digital hearing aids that go inside the ear canal and are virtually undetectable, especially if the person has long hair to cover their ears.

Over the past year there have been two new developments in hearing aids; the MIT version is a new take on the way molds are measured and a Denmark company’s new hearing aid offers better sound quality with integrated digital signal processing, which also analyzes how the mold is used.

MIT proposed using a laser technology in order to measure the inner and the outer portion of the ear because the way a mold is made now, a waxy substance is poured into the ear and allowed to dry and then trimmed and that is the ear mold which holds the tube that connects to the hearing aid with the computer parts inside. This mold is not flexible and does not allow for any ‘give’ when the person wearing it is talking or chewing. The MIT laser would measure a person’s ear while they are chewing on a piece of gum which would then allow for a three dimensional view of the inner ear and then a more flexible mold would be created.

In the Denmark company’s version, they propose a hearing aid with integrated digital signal processing to analyze the vibrations and algorithms held within the mold.  What this company is trying to do is minimize the amount of feedback while optimizing hearing aids for maximum stability.  Their findings, at their hearing clinic, also help determine the best place to put a microphone.  Their software program allows them to better study the human ear and how it hears individually and the best course of action to be taken in order for that individual to hear better.
