An otolaryngologist, an ear nose and throat doctor should be a person’s first stop when they suspect they are suffering from a hearing loss. An otolaryngologist will rule out such things as a bacterial infection or tumor before administering several different hearing test, usually in a soundproof booth in which a person wears headphones and listens to different sounds at various pitches which determine the severity of their hearing loss.

Once a doctor has determined the amount of hearing loss a person has, they typically see an audiologist, who usually shares an office with an otolaryngologist, to be fitted for a hearing aid.  Hearing aids, although very helpful to nearly all but the most severe cases of hearing impairment or deafness, are balked at by many because they are associated with elderly people in addition to being more of a vain issue then eyeglasses which many think of as an accessory or something that could enhance their looks rather than take away from them.

An audiologist will ask a person about their lifestyle to help them determine which brand of hearing aid would be best suited for them.  Many of the discount hearing aids contain a ‘directional microphone’ which allows the wearer to focus on a single person speaking in a crowded room or noisy environment.  Other features on various hearing aids include a ‘telecoil’ which allows a hearing impaired person wearing a hearing aid to speak on the phone and hear the person at the other end with much more clarity.  There are also hearing aids made with ‘feedback suppression’ technology which limit the amount of abrasive whistling noise some hearing aids give off when they come too close to other electronic devices.

People come to wear hearing aids because of many different causes, some because they did not use proper ear protection when they were younger – listening to loud music or go to frequent earsplitting concerts; working in noisy factories; working with thunderous heavy machinery or taking a medication for many years which could damage the nerves in the hearing system. Nerve damage in the hearing system has the most profound effect on a person because it cannot be helped with some of the most powerful hearing aids on the market.  Many people with profound hearing loss or deafness rely on American Sign Language to communicate with others.
